As its name implies, the International Commission on Illumination - abbreviated as CIE from its French title Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage - is an organization devoted to international cooperation and exchange of information among its member countries on all matters relating to the science and art of lighting.

CIE's New Organisational Structure

The CIE General Assembly meeting in Budapest in May last year voted to create a new separate, commercial, taxable entity to be called CIE Scientific Services GmbH (a company with limited liability, owned 100% by the CIE).  This will enable the non-profit CIE as we know it to maintain its tax-exempt status, while any income generating activities, like publications and conferences, will fall under the new entity.
